Distillery Wissels still active since 1920.
Craftsmanship cannot be learned in school. No matter how smart you are. The apprentice can only be taught by standing next to the master distiller. It is the only way to master all the little tricks and to reveal the authentic secrets. This is no longer possible these days? That’s what you taught. The traditional grain distillery Wissels in Hasselt is a prime example. When Renier Wissels got his license back in 1920, he already had years of experience. He learned the skills at Villers, Fryns, where he was tutored by the Dutch Master distiller Becker. Grandson Roland took over but unfortunately. The youngest distiller of the country, Koen De Jans, bought the distillery to save it from its bankruptcy. Out of respect for the rich tradition, he retained the name Wissels. In the distillery it seems as if time has stood still. Koen Jans still continues in the same way with traditional recipes, traditional processing methods, even the pot stills (alembic), dating from 1948 still work fine. The whole process is still done in house from grain to drink. People are always welcome to come and see our working methods. See you soon.
